What is Chiropractic Care?

Chiropractic is a system of care based on proper musculoskeletal alignment and optimum nervous system function. Body functions like digestion and the various body organs like the heart or kidneys are controlled by nerves that run off the spinal cord. These nerves run along or pass between the bones (vertebrae) of the spine. Spinal alignment thus affects nervous function, and correcting misalignment can relieve pain and promote optimum health and wellness.

What Kind of Training do Chiropractors Receive?

Chiropractic education is on a par basis with the medical profession. Both take the same sciences and sit side by side when taking the Board Exams to get their doctorate. The differences come with their specialties, where Medical Doctors specialize in medicine, Doctors of Chiropractic specialize in anatomy and look to the spine in relation to health. A bachelor’s degree is required for entry and clinical rounds are required before graduating Chiropractic School. In addition to the basics of anatomy, physiology, musculoskeletal function and diagnostic tests like imaging studies, chiropractors are trained in nutrition, whole-body wellness, and similar topics. In addition, a chiropractor is required to complete continuing education after graduation to maintain licensure.

What Services Are Included in Chiropractic Care?

Spinal adjustment or manipulation is probably the best-known of the various chiropractic techniques. Using the hands or a special device, the chiropractor applies force to a joint, while keeping other joints immobilized. This frees up the joint, restores alignment and promotes normal function. Dr. Harris also offers other services like Class IV hot laser therapy, electrical interferential therapy, vibration plate exercise, spinal disc decompression and the use of an oscillator to release scar tissue are focused on the musculoskeletal system. Others, like nutrition and weight loss counseling, promote overall health.

What’s Chiropractic Care Used For?

Back, neck and joint pain are common reasons for people to seek the services of a chiropractor. Headaches often respond to chiropractic treatment, especially if the source of the problem is a spinal misalignment in the neck. Both adults and children can benefit from chiropractic care, and back pain associated with pregnancy may also respond to chiropractic adjustments. In addition to the hands-on adjustments, chiropractors may also offer services like ergonomic or gait analysis to identify problems in the way patients move their bodies.
